  • The Early Childhood Teaching Department

Mission

The Rangi Ruru Early Childhood College is a small, friendly, whanau-oriented college of education fostering positive collaborative relationships, both within and beyond the College. It is focused on providing high quality programmes for early childhood educators.

We offer tertiary programmes for nannying (level 5) and early childhood teaching (level 7). We provide opportunities for students to bridge from the New Zealand Certificate in Nanny Education (Level 5) to the Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education). We aim to maintain our excellent national and international reputation and to continue to attract students from throughout New Zealand and overseas. Our graduates will be advocates for children and work in partnership with parents.

We are committed to meeting the national demand for increased participation and improvement in the quality of early childhood education as recognised in the 10-year government strategic plan for early childhood Pathways to the Future: Nga Huarahi Aratiki (2002).

The Rangi Ruru Early Childhood College is registered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority pursuant to the 1990 Education Amendment Act and is accredited to offer approved courses.

Rangi Ruru Early Childhood College is a division of the Rangi Ruru Girls’ School Board of Governors (Inc).

The Rangi Journey

Since its early days as the first provider of nanny training in New Zealand, Rangi Ruru Early Childhood College has established a reputation for providing quality nanny training and teacher education programmes.

Rangi Ruru Early Childhood College was established in 1985 by Jill Bromley, the previous Director, and Jenny Walker, the Deputy Director. There was an unprecedented number of applicants for the first intake of nannies. The School of Home Management opened in 1985 with 24 students. Since that time student numbers grew, as did the early childhood qualification options available to students choosing a career in early childhood.

In 1992 a Diploma in Early Childhood Group Education and Care was offered as a second year course for teaching in early childhood centres.

In 1997 the Early Childhood Teaching Department was established with the first offering of a Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education). The three-year Diploma of Teaching programme was developed in collaboration with Whitieria Community Polytechnic in Porirua, Wellington, and we continue to have an association with Whitieria. The first graduates of the full-time three year diploma programme were awarded the qualification in 2000. During these development phases the College has been housed in several buildings in the vicinity of the Rangi Ruru school grounds.

The close association with Rangi Ruru Girls’ School enables the College to provide excellent facilities and support systems to its students. The College has a close association with the Rangi Ruru Pre-school which is also situated in the school grounds.

The College specialises in qualifications for nannying and early childhood teaching. We are a small community with a big international reputation as a provider of early childhood training. Our graduates seek positions as nannies or early childhood teachers in New Zealand and across the world.

A focus on practical learning opportunities with children and specialist training within small classes ensures that our students have opportunities to develop the skills and confidence to pursue a satisfying career in early childhood sector.
